They just fade away

the country called

they answered

But not the sons

or the daughters

of the greedy

The well to do

some people call them

politicians

Years ago some say

they spoke with

 forked tongues

The country called

they answered

signed a contract

gave blood, sweat, tears

Sometimes

their limbs, lives and sanity

the streets are  filled

with them

Contract renegotiated

budget cuts

they just fade

don’t forget hire a vet

Some went above

 and beyond

a chestful of medals

You can’t sell

medals for food

Those that sacrificed

the most

get the least

they don’t die

They  fade away

slowly through  budget cuts

estranged family

Alone or

 just with memories

of comraderie

that no longer  exists

Sometimes

 they

 just

 fade
